Last week, I visited my cousin in Portland, Maine and spent a couple of days with her. During my stay at her place, she was amazed by the amount of water I drink every day. You can make use mobile phone applications to actually keep a track of the amount of water you are drinking in a day. Among many free apps available for both Android and iPhone, here are two popular free drinking water apps that may help make it easier to remember to stay well hydrated (in no particular order). I used to drink water whenever I was thirsty. Now, I drink water when I "have to." Or, if you cannot drink water regularly, another way to make sure that you are drinking enough water is to schedule it. For example, you can drink 2 glasses of water when you get up in the morning, 1 glass of water after your meals, 1 glass of water after you visit the restroom and one before you are going to sleep. This practice will ensure that you are getting sufficient water throughout the day. If you are planning a day out or are going to sit all day long at your desk, make sure that you carry a refillable water bottle, cup or tumbler along with you.When thirst strikes, it will be convenient for a lazy person to pick it up and drink from it. Surprisingly, carrying excess fat around the waist can be more dangerous than carrying it elsewhere, such as the hips or the thighs. Abdominal fat puts people at greater risk for heart disease and cancer compared with people who have a similar body mass index (BMI) but who carry their fat in other parts of the body. A cold wave swept Korea and there is no sign that temperature will go up anytime soon. When one feels cold, he or she can wear more layers of clothes. Recently, an online posting on "things to avoid to maintain health and stay slim" grabbed much of Korean netizens' (net citizens) attention. In order to solve constipation that has been hanging around them with annoying persistence, many have tried different strategies to get rid of constipation-especially relying on dietary treatments. Forty-two percent of the respondents (758 people) answered that they continued to consume fruits, dietary fibers or yogurts while 19% (337 people) said they regularly exercise or stretch their bodies. Only 13% (233 people) said they take laxative (constipation medicine). Consuming fiber-contained vegetables, fruits, whole grains (whole-wheat bread) and legumes such as lentils, beans, peas and chickpeas is good for constipation. Also, regular exercise enables digestive system to be active and healthy. Every October 29 is the "Stroke Day" designated by the World Stroke Organization (WSO). In Korea, stroke is the most fatal disease next to cancer. With 4 out of 10 patients at the age of 50 or less, stroke is common among the young people as well. Stroke is a disease that needs strict lifestyle management in our daily lives. Here are some of the ways that can help prevent the sudden attack of stroke. I know these might sound very strict, but remember that this is about your one and only life. Quit smoking: smokers in general have higher (double to triple) chances of getting stroke compared to non-smokers. Quitting smoking reduces the number of people suffering from stroke (about 25percent). If one stops smoking for a year, he or she can reduce the risk of stroke occurrence to about 50 percent. Drink less: if you cannot control yourself to drink less than 2 glasses of alcohol a day, then you should consider quitting drinking. Regardless of the kind or brand, drinking about 7 glasses of alcohol per day increases the risk of stroke occurrence three times higher. Aside from arrhythmia and myocardial contractile malfunction, heavy drinking can also damage the blood vessels in the brain, which results into cerebral hemorrhage (stroke) or infarction . Control your weight: obesity increases the level of blood fats and cholesterol, which can disturb blood circulation. If a person is overweight/obese, there is higher chance of getting high blood pressure, diabetes and hyperlipidemia, all of which have higher risk of stroke. People who are above the normal weight (Body Mass Index) have 2 to 3 times higher risk of stroke. Therefore, one should maintain a normal weight. Exercise regularly - at least 3 times a week: regular exercising not only reduces blood pressure, but it is helpful for preventing obesity and relieving stress. Active physical activity enables faster blood circulation and increases the elasticity of blood vessels. When we say "regular," it means exercising at least 3 times a week for more than 30 minutes a day. Cardio exercises such as walking, swimming and aerobics are highly recommended. Have a bland diet (eat less salty): Consuming too much salt increases the blood pressure. To prevent stroke, one should have a bland diet. (I know this can be hard for people who always put extra dressing or spices on their meals!) Also, meat-lovers should watch out their cholesterol level. Instead of consuming too much meat, take more fruit, vegetable and fish to reduce the risk of stroke. Relieve stress from time to time: when a person is stressed, a sympathetic nerve hormone called catecholamine is being secreted, increasing the heart rate and blood pressure. There is also a study that when the state of being stressed continues, it gives rise to arteriosclerosis (hardening of arteries). Hence, stress should be released as soon as possible. Taking a break from work and taking plenty of sleep can help. Listed advice can be simple yet requires a lot of efforts. You have to change the daily routine to stay healthy and avoid stroke. However, it is not impossible to change habits. Are you working every day that you don't have time for exercising? Do you think spending time to relieve stress is a luxury for you? This semester, I'm taking a course called, "Introduction to Global Mental Health," a course offered by the Clinical Psychology department. I am a non-psychiatrist yet as someone interested in humanitarian issues, I wanted to learn how to understand some of the causes, symptoms and treatments for mental illness. Taking a course (today was my fourth class) like this is a mind-blowing experience for me, yet it is both surprising and frustrating to see how a lot of people these days suffer from psychological problems. While reading articles this week, I found an eye-catching word: Sandwich Syndrome. Let us figure out what it is. "I am not motivated to work." "Now I cannot feel the sense of achievement no more" "I cannot sympathize people when they share sad stories." "I hesitate meeting people these days." "I just want to leave this country - go on a travel." It is not an exaggeration to say that basically EVERYONE suffers from stress, whether from work, family, friends or many other issues. "Sandwich Syndrome" is not a medical term but it has an important meaning for people in the field of mental health medicine. Here are some descriptions of people who suffer from "Sandwich Syndrome": a person in the middle position at work (between the boss and a rookie), a woman who has to take care of both work and family, and those "baby boomers" who worked hard but now undergo financial pressures in an aging society. Since such stress can be stumbling blocks to sympathizing others or even communicating with them, we need to pay attention to this syndrome. The tricky part of this "Sandwich kind of situation" is that there are not many solutions. One cannot easily quit his or her job just because of co-workers, or you cannot just ignore your mother-in-law's birthday regardless of having a big project at work. People who are less sensitive might find their way out of such situations, but people who have a strong sense of responsibility become the stressed sandwiches, overwhelmed by the feeling of anxiety. When this gets worse, they develop obsession and perfectionism that it will result into sudden outbursts such as shouting to the boss, quitting, and etc. "Sandwich Syndrome" also affects physical wellbeing of the people. When stress never ends, this stimulates the sympathetic nerves, excretes too much of the cortisol (hormone), finally resulting in digestive disorders, insomnia, anxiety, depression, memory failure and so on. How to get out of Sandwich Syndrome? Do you think you're one of those sandwiches? Okay. The first thing to do is to recover your mind, which is to activate the "emotion charging system " in your nerves. Turn off the busily operating system of your mind for some time, and take a step back and relax. In fact, having a ten-minute break away from all the contacts and external information can actually help relieve stress. Some of the "mind vacances" that Health Chosun recommended are the following: Spare 10 minutes a day to "walk and meditate." Avoid using smartphones all the time Have a nice deep-talk with your close friend Eat in a quiet, peaceful place Take a deep breath three times and feel the flow of the breath Read 3 poems a week Watch a sad or emotional movie to calm yourself Another Tip: In Korean culture, when someone suddenly gets so stressed, people offer some cold water to lower the heat (especially to those who have high-blood pressure).
