Last week, I visited my cousin in Portland, Maine and spent a couple of days with her. During my stay at her place, she was amazed by the amount of water I drink every day. (I drink at least 2 liters per day) Many people simply forget that drinking enough water throughout the day is necessary to maintain a well-hydrated state. Others know the importance, like my cousin, but they fail to keep track of their must-drink 8 glasses per day. Or, there are others who avoid drinking water to escape restroom visits.

We've been mentioning of the importance of drinking healthy water every week. But how can we increase water intake? Track your water intake - Use Mobile Apps. You can make use mobile phone applications to actually keep a track of the amount of water you are drinking in a day. All you have to do is set the number of glasses of water you want to drink each day and the app will send you reminders to drink water during the day.

Among many free apps available for both Android and iPhone, here are two popular free drinking water apps that may help make it easier to remember to stay well hydrated (in no particular order). (For your information, Biocera is not affiliated with any of the applications or developers below. This is from personal experience or recommendation of the editor)

Waterlogged: Waterlogged makes it nearly impossible to forget to drink enough water. The app allows you to set reminders for yourself at scheduled or random intervals to get something to drink and keeps track of how well you are meeting your daily water drinking goals. You can even customize the app based on the type and size of drinking glasses or water bottles you have, right down to the ounce. Simply take a picture of the glass or water bottled you are drinking from and note the volume of water it holds. Next time you drink from it, find in the list and tap to record.

Daily Water: Daily Water is designed to help individuals set drinking water goals and track the volume of water they are drinking on a daily basis. The app allows for schedule reminders and offers a basic statistical analysis of the amount of what you have consumed over the course of a day, week or month.

Aside from these two, there are more than 50 water-drinking applications available online. Simply search [free water drinking apps] and you will find dozens of them. I have downloaded one in my iPhone. I have set a timer (once every two hours) to remind myself of drinking 9 glasses of water per day. This actually works! I used to drink water whenever I was thirsty. Now, I drink water when I "have to." Or, if you cannot drink water regularly, another way to make sure that you are drinking enough water is to schedule it. For example, you can drink 2 glasses of water when you get up in the morning, 1 glass of water after your meals, 1 glass of water after you visit the restroom and one before you are going to sleep. This practice will ensure that you are getting sufficient water throughout the day.

If you are planning a day out or are going to sit all day long at your desk, make sure that you carry a refillable water bottle, cup or tumbler along with you. When thirst strikes, it will be convenient for a lazy person to pick it up and drink from it. Of course, do not forget to use
