Last week at a Korean TV show "Healing Camp," a famous Korean actress Hong Eun-hee shared the story of her dad, who suffered from colorectal cancer. Not many people are familiar with such disease, but the number of colorectal cancer patients is rapidly increasing in Korea and around the world. Today we are going to discuss about the definition, causes, treatment and methods of prevention of colorectal cancer.
According to American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org), Colorectal cancer is a term for cancer that starts in either the colon or the rectum. Colon cancer and rectal cancer have many features in common. While we do not know the exact cause of most colorectal cancers, there are certain known risk factors. Some of the risk factors that one cannot control are age, family history of colorectal cancer, having had colorectal cancer or certain kinds of polyps before, having a history of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, type 2 diabetes, etc. On the other hand, some of the factors are linked to one's lifestyle, which increases the risk of colorectal cancer. Bad news to meat-lovers! It is said that certain types of diets: one that is high in red meats (beef, lamb, or liver) and processed meats (like hot dogs, bologna, and lunch meat) can increase your colorectal cancer risk. Moreover, meats that are cooked at very high heat (frying, broiling, or grilling) may create chemicals that might increase cancer risk. Aside from the eating habits, lack of exercise, smoking and drinking alcohol can increase the risk of getting colorectal cancer (American Cancer Society, n.d.).
Surprisingly, a recent study by University of Colorado at Boulder discovered that those showerheads that one uses everyday can deliver a face full of potentially pathogenic bacteria. The researchers used high-tech instruments and lab methods to analyze roughly 50 showerheads from nine cities in seven states that included New York City, Chicago and Denver. They concluded about 30 percent of the devices harbored significant levels of Mycobacterium avium, a pathogen linked to pulmonary disease that most often infects people with compromised immune systems but which can occasionally infect healthy people. Such bacterial infection can increase the risk of both bladder and colorectal cancer. For more information, read the article that is available at:
Similar to other types of cancers, symptoms of colorectal cancer appear after quite some time. The symptoms include having blood in your bodily waste (feces), decrease in appetite and a loss in weight. Also, some people may want to go to bathroom too frequently. As colorectal cancer can be found at the late-stage, prevention is extremely important. One should do exactly the opposite of the high risk factors to prevent himself/herself from getting colorectal cancer. Reduce the amount of red meat consumption and instead eat more of fresh vegetables and fruits that are rich in fiber. Food that are rich in calcium is highly recommended, while food that are rich in sodium should be avoided. Exercise regularly and have a balanced diet to maintain the average weight. Refrain from drinking and smoking too much and get frequent check-ups through endoscopy.
As mentioned above, using a clean showerhead is important in preventing the colorectal cancer. Use Biocera Atozero Happy Showerhead. Biocera Atozero Happy Showerhead can be trusted (compared to the above-mentioned showerheads) as it changes tap water into clean and soft water through the softening function of filters inside. It not only removes chlorine and floating matters (rust, foreign substances) but the ceramic balls inside the showerhead sterilize harmful bacteria that may cause bladder and colorectal cancer. Be wise and use products that can protect your body from colorectal cancer. the more: www.biocera.com
