A recently conducted survey in New Zealand has showed that about half of the women (aged 20 to 40) are suffering from constipation. According to the survey conducted by Zespri, a kiwi brand in New Zealand, through a mobile application, about 40 percent of the participants answered that they suffered from discomfort in bowel movements for the past month.

Moreover, 35 percent of those respondents answered that they experience irregularity in bowel movements at least once every week. The major concerns that women have with constipation are that it leads to increase in weight (potbelly), as well as psychological pressure, stress, indigestion and even skin problems.

What are the major causes of constipation?

Constipation is defined as having a bowel movement less than three times a week, often painful and accompanied by straining, bloating and the sensation of a full bowel. (*There is no 'right' number of bowel movements but normal passing of stools can occur three times a day or three times a week, depending on each individual's system.)In the case of women, the reason why they suffer most from constipation is that many of them avoid going to public restrooms and wait until they get home (they ignore the urge to use the toilet). Such a habit can lead to chronic constipation. Also, extreme diet (low amount of fiber in the diet), stress, low intake of water and lack of physical activity can be other causes. In addition, constipation often becomes serious in certain periods of time (when progesterone is running wild), such as during pregnancy or between the time of ovulation and monthly periods-as the female hormone retrains the movement of the large intestines.

What should we do to prevent constipation?

In order to prevent one from getting constipation, one should remember thatconstipation depends all on factors that include the food you eat. Therefore, people should consume fiber-contained food/fiber. Fiber helps form soft, bulky stools. It can be found in many vegetables, fruits, whole grains (whole-wheat bread) and legumes such as lentils, beans, peas and chickpeas. More importantly, one should drink plenty of clean, healthy water - Antioxidant Alkaline Water - and other liquids help prevent constipation.  I've mentioned this several times in previous Biocera Newsletter, but one should drink at least 8 glasses of water. Indeed, a liter(s) of water is sometimes considered the best and fast medicine for constipation. Last but not least, for those who stay in the office *(indoor) for a long time should set regular exercise, which may help one's digestive system, and stay in active and healthy. Even simply taking a stroll (20 mins) can be helpful every day. Therefore, before you shut down, remember to drink a lot of water every day and exercise. Then you'll find yourself enjoying a constipation-free , comfortable life!
