Did you know that "Taekwondo Day" actually exists?
Surprisingly, September 4th became the Day of Taekwondo, celebrating the selection of Taekwondo as an official Olympic event on September 4, 1994.
Taekwondo is a martial art sport in which requires the movement of arms and legs to attack and defense. Taekwondo is known to have some positive effects on people such as promoting the growth of the young as well as enhancing the physical strength of the aged. In fact, Taekwondo is good for the prevention of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disorders, especially effective for females when they train themselves from younger age. It was proven by the research team of Professor Yang from Sungshin Women's University in which they compared the bone density and pulse wave velocity of 10 female college students who has learned taekwondo for 10 years with those who haven't had such experience. As a result, the taekwondo trainers are proven to have higher level of bone density and lower pulse wave velocity- which means they are healthier.
Bone density refers to the mineral content in each area of the bone, which is usually used for an early diagnosis and/or treatment of osteoporosis. Pulse wave velocity is the speed of the blood coming out of the heart; the faster the velocity, the thicker and harder the blood vessel is, making the blood pressure high. According to the analysis by Prof. Yang's research team, the reason why taekwondo has the abovementioned effects is that it is a combination of both aerobic and anaerobic exercise. Taekwondo can be divided into two: it has "pumsae" which means the continuous operation of the basic techniques of attack and defense (anaerobic), and connection as well as the "gyeorugi (competition)" which requires continuous steps and jumps (anaerobic). To maintain the appropriate bone density level, both aerobic and anaerobic exercise are needed.
Especially for the women who exercised during the puberty has the average of 8.3 percent higher bone density. Bone density level decreases as we get older, starting from the age of 30. The decreasing rate is much faster for the women. This is why practicing taekwondo from an early age is recommended.
